Chapter Ten

Boots & Bangles was the social event of the spring in Whiskey River and everyone who was anyone attended. Ollie was waiting at the foot of the stairs at the Harwood House hotel for Colby who’d asked him to give her some privacy while she got ready for the evening.

“Ollie, dude, good to see you.”

He turned to see Gage Powell a former bull rider who’d married a few years back and had stopped riding full-time.

“Gage, good to see you. What are you doing in Whiskey River?” he asked, after they exchanged a bro hug.

“I’m here for Boots & Bangles. Got hooked up with a pair of Kelly Boots from Nick. What are you doing here?”

“Same. My folks moved to Whiskey River about a year and a half ago and my entire family is attending.”

“Yeah? Can’t wait to meet the rest of your clan,” Gage said.

“Do you live here now?”

“Sort of part-time. Nick and I have been working on a stud program for bulls. I want to hear more about how our bulls did last weekend. Nick said they were pretty good,” Gage said.

“Yeah, they were. I was impressed. How did I not know this about you? I was here at Christmas.”

Gage rubbed the back of his neck and shook his head. “We headed to the wife’s family for the holidays and then stopped by my folks in Oklahoma.”

Gage looked over Ollie’s shoulder and let out a wolf whistle. “Damn, woman, you just keep getting hotter each time I see you.”

“You have never been a sweet-talker, Gage Powell, but thanks for the compliment.”

Ollie turned to see Sierra Montez Powell standing there. She was pretty and everything but in his mind he knew that Colby was prettier. Gage’s wife was the daughter of the heritage jeans company who often sponsored events at the bigger rodeos. He’d met her a time or two in the past.

“Ollie? I hardly recognize you all duded up,” she said. “You here for the gala?”

“I am. Just waiting on my woman.”

“If you want to keep her, maybe don’t let her hear you calling her that,” she said with a wink.

“I’m a bit smarter than I must look,” he said with a wink in return.

“Glad to hear that,” Gage said. “We’ll see you at the gala.”

He waved goodbye to the couple. It was nice to see them still happy together. He was coming to realize there was a lot more in Whiskey River to make it home than he’d previously realized. He’d been trying to keep his distance because of old hurts from his family but he was seeing so many connections and of course with Colby by his side today, he was seeing everything a bit differently.

It had almost backfired more than once. His family for some reason brought out the worst in him. He could be his regular self when he was at the rodeo because it was so foreign to the Rossi world. But once he was back with them…all bets were off.

He heard the elevator bell ping and looked up as the doors opened and Colby walked out of the car.
